Police flats catch fire after an alleged explosion
SOPHIATOWN – The cause of the fire is still unclear but all is under control.
Those that are familiar with the Sophiatown police flats are aware of the alleged safety and security concerns faced by those living there.
On 6 June at around 12pm, the flats caught on fire, allegedly due to a heater that had exploded.
Emergency services were called to the scene when the sound of the explosion went off. Flames engulfed the 8th floor of the building. Families living there were immediately evacuated while the firefighters went up to put out the fire.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
As of 1.30pm the fire was under control and all seemed to be well. No serious injuries or fatalities have been reported.
