PSL giants give back to the community

NORWOOD – Bidvest Wits brings its senior players to Norwood tournament to inspire and encourage local youngsters.

Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Bidvest Wits, also known as the Clever Boys, attended a soccer tournament at Norwood Primary School on Youth Day.

The aim of the visit was to plant some seeds of hope and encouragement to the players of Norwood Young Stars and other up and coming local youngsters. The school hosted Stars as part of the commemoration of Youth Day, an event which was attended by a number of soccer teams from the inner-city of Jozi.

Wits, the 2016/17 PSL champions of the Absa Premiership came on board and donated soccer kits to the teams that participated in the tournament.

Bidvest Wits chairperson Alan Fainman said his club supported community development and that was why they committed to help Norwood Young Stars, by ensuring that they have the much-needed training equipment and a secure facility for their practices. Stars’ senior team plies its trade in the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Promotional League.

“We’ve been working with the Norwood Young Stars for some time now,” he said.

“I was intrigued by what Venita [Masisi, Stars owner] is doing in her community. We help them pay monthly rental for the training facility they use. Today we donated soccer kits to a number of teams that took part in this year’s tournament.”

He added that they wanted to encourage local youngsters to join the beautiful game and not fall prey to social ills inflicting various communities.

Speaking to North Eastern Tribune after the event, Masisi thanked all the sponsors for their contributions in ensuring that the tournament was a success.

She said the tournament was not only about playing soccer and having fun but also to inculcate a culture of discipline in the youth rather than them using school holidays as an opportunity to take part in wrongdoings and substance abuse.
