Brixton Social Cluster aimed at improving the lives of Brixton residents

BRIXTON –The Brixton Social cluster that is being upgraded by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) will offer the residents of the area a number of things such as a play area for little children.

The Brixton Social Cluster is being upgraded by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) on behalf of the City of Johannesburg.

The transformation will turn the suburb into a vibrant and sustainable social cluster to offer a range of uses and choices for people who reside in the Brixton area, including a playing area for little children.

“Once construction is complete, the R130-million social cluster will consist of a new multi-purpose sports and recreation centre, with upgraded sports fields catering to netball and basketball, tennis courts, a public square, a new library, and coffee shop, an upgraded swimming pool complex, a green open space and kids play area,” said the City of Johannesburg, in a released statement.

The Brixton Social Cluster is said to be 63.7 per cent complete currently in terms of construction progress. The City said that the social cluster will significantly improve the lives of residents of Brixton, and of the surrounding neighbourhoods, by creating jobs, promoting active lifestyles, and providing opportunities for social interaction among communities.

“The project has created employment opportunities for the community, and in particular the youth, to alleviate unemployment in the community. To date, 10 SMMEs and 50 local labourers have been employed and are receiving continuous training and development through the project,” said the city in a statement.

Reuben Masango, MMC for Development Planning said, “One of the mayoral priorities is to promote economic development and achieve economic growth that reduces unemployment, inequality, and poverty. As the City, we are proud of these projects that create employment and opportunities for our residents.”

The social cluster’s upgrades are being implemented in phases.
