2thuka to show off their skills

AUCKLAND PARK – A jewellery design programme is set to showcase their collection at UJ on Freedom Day

AUCKLAND PARK – Over the last 11 years, the 2thuka Jewellery Competition has brought the joy of design to jewellery students around the country.

The 2thuka Jewellery Development Programme is aimed at uplifting people through the skills of jewellery design and provides them with the knowledge they need to do so. Carola Ross of 2thuka said, “With support from the Department of Arts and Culture and top jewellery industry professionals, we conceptualise and implement an annual competition, with varied and exciting themes to inspire the students.”

2Thuka will soon showcase their 2018 collection to show the world exactly what they do. Ross said, “On 27 April we opened our 2018 2thuka collection to the public. We will also be sharing our story and history.”

The showcase will be hosted at the FADA Gallery at the University of Johannesburg’s Bunting Road campus from 10am.

The teams of mentors and trainers from institutions such as Durban University of Technology, Ekhuruleni Jewellery Project, University of Johannesburg and Orbit TVET College to name a few, pulled together to guide the next generation of jewellery students through the design process and the magic of making one’s ideas come alive in sterling silver.

Ross said, “Over the years, our competition winners have gone on to carve out their own niches in their industry, realising that the real prize was the work they put in, under the guidance of their 2thuka mentors and trainers.”

She wanted to thank all those involved in making this programme a reality. Ross said, “Eleven exquisite exhibitions later, and it is thanks to the team of devotees who believe in what 2thuka brings to all of the participants, in the mentoring and guidance that encourages the fascinating work that is designed and made each year.”
