MMC Reuben Masango visits Brixton social cluster development project

BRIXTON – MMC for Development Planning councilor Reuben Masango attended a meeting last night, 4 April, to give an update on the progress of the Brixton Social Cluster development project.

The Johannesburg Development Agency on behalf of the City of Johannesburg is implementing the construction of the Social Cluster in Brixton. The Social Cluster’s construction budget is estimated at R130 million with upgrades being implemented in phases.

The Brixton Social Cluster development project is said to be currently 62 per cent complete, with a revised practical completion date of mid-July 2019. Ward 58 stakeholders were also present at the meeting.

“The first phase includes the construction of a new multi-purpose sports and recreation centre; upgrading existing sports fields and green open space; kids’ play area and parking space. The second phase consists of the creation of a public square, constructing a new library, coffee shop and upgrading of the swimming pool complex,” read the statement released by the Johannesburg Development Agency.

Small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) also attended the meeting. According to the stakeholder manager in the office of MMC Reuben Masango, Poppy Louw, the Brixton Social Cluster project has created employment opportunities for the community, particularly the youth.

To date, 10 SMMEs and 50 local labourers have been employed, and are receiving continuous training and development.

“The social development project is for the community of Ward 58 and last night’s meeting was to update the residents and stakeholders of what the progress for the social development project is. Last night’s meeting was the second or third meeting if I’m not mistaken ever since the project began. Once the project is completed, the project will be handed over to community development,” said MMC Reuben Masango.

“The wonderful work of the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) continues, working with the Department of Development Planning to deliver the much-needed facilities for the use and benefit of the residents of Ward 58 and the entire City as a whole,” said MMC  Masango on Twitter.
