Increase in vehicle theft

BRIXTON – Motor vehicle theft increases in various Brixton police sectors.


BRIXTON – Brixton police are warning the public to be vigilant after an increase in motor vehicle thefts in the area.

According to Brixton police spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff, the targeted vehicle makes are Toyota, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Ranger and Toyota bakkies.

The areas that are mostly targeted are Melville and Auckland Park on 4th Street, 7th Street, 2nd Avenue up to 7th Avenue and Main Road. Also on the corner of Windsor Road and Streatley Avenue, and Saint Swithens Road. In Sector 2, the areas of Brixton, Hursthill, Rossmore, Vrededorp and Pageview are problematic.

Most of these thefts occur on Tuesdays to Saturdays between 12 noon and 4pm and 5pm to 8pm.

Backhoff said, “Members of the public are requested to be more conscious of their safety when parking their vehicles. The community are advised to be aware of their surroundings if they are going or leaving entertainment areas or restaurants. Residents in these communities are requested to inform visitors from other areas of this crime trend. Restaurant owners are also urged to play their part in assisting in keeping the valuables of their customers safe.”

Backhoff issued the following safety tips for the community:

  • Don’t park your vehicle in a dark street
  • Park in properly designated parking areas
  • Make sure all windows and your boot is properly locked
  • If you use a remote to lock your vehicle make sure manually that it is properly locked
  • Don’t leave any valuables in sight in the vehicle such as cell phones, money, cameras, and laptops
  • Don’t trust any car guard to look after your vehicle. They are possibly involved in this specific crime, take a picture on your cell phone of the person that is looking after your vehicle.
