The Pad Princess aims to keep girls in school

NORTHCLIFF – Learners were given sanitary pads for the next four months.

NORTHCLIFF – The Pad Princess project handed out pads and pantyliners to girls in need of sanitary pads at Northcliff Primary School on 13 March.

The Pad Princess donated about 4 000 sanitary pads to 100 girls – this will be enough to last the girls for the next four months, after which the project plans to visit the school again. Two bags of panty liners were given to the school for an emergency in their sick rooms and to be handed out as needed.

Jenny Laas heads the project with Alyson Samson from Kindness like Confetti and they have been running this project for about five years. They teach and help young girls about sanitary hygiene, how to look after their bodies properly and what is happening with their bodies as most young girls aren’t taught this valuable information at home.

The project gives out see-through packs of 10 pads. Samson explained, “We get shop returns and shop-soiled goods. The outside package may be damaged, a rat has chewed on them or someone has torn the packet, we salvage what we can from the pack and we re-pack them with a group of ladies doing their community service.

“We teach the girls, especially in the rural areas that they need to put the used pads in a fire or roll it with toilet paper and throw in the bin properly but never to flush the pads.
