Students and police put their energy and sweat into raising awareness on student safety

AUCKLAND PARK – Police overjoyed with the participation of students at their safety campaign.

AUCKLAND PARK – Students of the University of Johannesburg get key safety and security lesson from Brixton police as part of their awareness campaign.

For the longest of times, Brixton Police Station has put the necessary means in place to promote the safety of students studying and living in their policing precinct. On 1 March they once again proved that they care for future graduates by hosting a safety awareness campaign at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

The theme of the campaign was ‘Don’t be taken for a ride’ and the station organised a fun way to let this message stick with them. Spokesperson of the station, Jeanette Backoff, explained the thought behind the theme. She said, “We had a competition where people were separated into teams and they had to ride gym bicycles for as long as possible. The teams were divided by UJ’s campuses, services, and the police station.”

As each team member got tired after cycling for as long as they could, they would quickly jump off and let their teammate pick up where they left off. The symbolism behind this was to alert students that they will be taken for a ride by criminals if they do not watch out and that teamwork is necessary to overcome such a challenge.

Among the UJ students and staff that participated in the competition, the police also delegated a team to partake, which included their Station Commander Colonel Mkhacani Maluleke. Like the others involved he peddled as fast and as long as he could all with a smile on his face. His presences at the event further highlighted how important the police take protecting students.

The campaign was hosted in partnership with UJ Protection Services, Metro police, and other relevant role players. Backoff shared that she and the station are extremely grateful for their involvement in the event. She made a special mention of the contributions of Absa and SSG Security for their contribution. The station looks forward to more engagements with local students and aims to maximise their safety in any way they can.
