Residents come together to clean up Emmarentia Dam

EMMARENTIA – School learners volunteered at the Emmarentia dam, where they picked up litter and weeded out invasive plants.

EMMARENTIA – The Emmarentia Residents Association held a clean-up on 23 February from about 8am to 12pm, where they worked through the Johannesburg Botanic Gardens.

The association, along with community members and schoolchildren volunteered their time to assist with cleaning the dog-walking section of the park. The clean-up was publicised beforehand on social media and posters were put up at the entrances to the park.

Jenny Grice from the association said, “We had a very successful morning with about 10 schoolkids from De La Salle, Parktown Girls as well as some residents and a resident’s gardener. We also received a cash donation from a walker who praised our work. We have used it to purchase some more gardening gloves.”

“We handed out plastic bags to encourage dog walkers to pick up after their dogs, picked up litter and weeded a lot of invasive plants that are flourishing in all the rains we’ve had,” said Grice.
