No arrests made by Sophiatown police following the raid of Westdene’s notorious 10A property

WESTDENE – Police find drugs but no drug dealers at their latest raid.

WESTDENE – As residents were preparing to hold a demonstration to protest against the notorious 10A property on 2nd Avenue in Westdene, Sophiatown police were conducting a raid at the property.

According to the police station’s spokesperson, Captain TJ de Bruyn the raid took place on 22 February. He said, “Sophiatown police together with members from the Tactical Response Team conducted yet another raid at the premises and confiscated 17 packets of dagga found in one of the rooms, however, no one was arrested as the room was unoccupied and the owner of the room was not on the premises at the time of the raid.”

It was not the first time the police had conducted such a raid at the property. De Bruyn added, “On 22 January, 55 packets of dagga were confiscated at the same premises. As the police regard this house as a hotspot, raids have been conducted on a weekly basis and regular patrols are conducted in the broader Westdene area.

“Over the past six months, there were a total of four cases registered at the premises which range from common assault to assault with the intention to inflict grievous bodily harm.” Outside of these cases, they have not received any formal written complaints regarding the property.

De Bruyn added that they would continue to engage with residents, the Community Policing Forum, security companies and other related role players to find solutions to this issue.
