UCT prove too much for UJ as they win their Varsity Cup match 42–23

CAPE TOWN – What will UJ have to do to register their first win of the season after losing their first four games?

CAPE TOWN – After losing their first two home games and their first away game, the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Varsity Cup rugby team travelled to Cape Town in the hopes of changing their fortunes.

Unfortunately, the trip to the University of Cape Town (UCT) ended in another loss for UJ, this time going down 42–23. The result leaves UJ in second last spot on the log.

The match kicked off with a try from UCT’s captain Josh Moon in the sixth minute with Darian Hock adding to the score with a successful conversion. UCT extended their lead thanks to a try from Coenrad Very, with Hock converting again.

It wasn’t until the 22nd minute when UJ finally registered their first points courtesy of a Tyreeq February try. UJ’s spirits were boosted following a try from Tatenda Mujawo which was converted by Mashudu Raphunga to get UJ back into the game.

Just before halftime, converted tries from UCT’S Kyle Bowman and Nyasha Tarusenga put the Cape team in control of the game yet again.

In the second half, UCT picked up where they left off with Tarusenga scoring two tries in the opening six minutes. A seven-pointer from Wynand Botha gave UJ something to celebrate in the 60th minute but ultimately the match ended 42–23 in favour of UCT.

Tarusenga walked away with the man of the match award and hopes his team can record another win on 4 March when they take on the University of the Free State.

UJ will return home to face Wits University in the Johannesburg derby. Both teams will be looking to improve their season’s record and take home the city’s bragging rights.
