IN PICTURES: Northcliff Bowls Club gets one over Protea

NORTHCLIFF – It won't be easy but Northcliff Bowls Club can take first or second place in the JBA Super Eight League.

Northcliff Bowls Club enjoyed a solid 12–1 win over Protea Bowling Club to strengthen its position in the Johannesburg Bowls Association Super Eight League.

The teams, who play in the sixth division of the league, competed during an overcast day at Northcliff Country Club on 2 February. Both teams’ kits were light blue and white, and bore an uncanny resemblance to each other, enough to trick an unfamiliar eye.

The match was much closer than the final scoreline suggested, but the final few bowls at each end proved decisive for the host team, turning the game on its head.

Northcliff Bowls Club president, Rob Nobbs commended the Protea players for being good sports despite the turn of events that must have been frustrating.

“We are now third in the standings and doing well,” he said, adding that like any bowls club, Northcliff experienced good seasons and bad seasons. But this one may turn out very well.

With four games to go, Northcliff is not far behind Leeuwkop Bowls Club on points, but will have to play out of their socks to catch Kensington Bowling Club at the top of the division.

“We have been playing in the club league for some time now but decided to move to the Super Eight League so that we could enter a mixed team as well.” The club’s mixed team is currently eighth in the first division.

Nobbs said what made a bowls team good was the understanding the four members have. If players can gel well, and have a strong team spirit, Nobbs said, they have a better chance at winning.
