88 year-old woman bitten by robbers

ALBERTVILLE – An 88 year-old was allegedly bitten by robbers in her home.

An elderly lady was allegedly savagely bitten by robbers in her home in the early evening of 2 January.

According to Suburban Control Centre’s Clive Maher, the 88-year-old woman lived alone in her house on Du Preez Street.

“At around 5.55pm, two suspects managed to gain entry into her house with the use of a crowbar by breaking the lock on her gate,” Maher said.

The suspects were able to easily brake her security gate and kick the front door in.

Being hard of hearing, the woman only realised that the suspects were inside the house after they had already gained entry.

“She was standing in the kitchen when the suspects confronted her with a metal pipe and crowbar, which they attempted to hit her with. When she started shouting, the one suspect grabbed her arm and bit her. She then fell to the ground startled, and the suspects made away with a few electronic items,” Maher said.

According to Maher, camera footage obtained from a neighbour allegedly shows a white BMW 1-series sedan involved in the incident, with a getaway driver inside.

The woman was taken to Netcare Garden City Hospital for treatment where she underwent surgery on her arm.

Maher continued, “She has been discharged and is currently staying with her family.”

Sophiatown Police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn confirmed that the incident took place and that no suspects have been arrested as of yet.

The case is still under investigation.
