Brixton police warn public not to assault suspected criminals

BRIXTON – Assault cases will be opened against any community member who assaults a suspect and he or she will be arrested, says police spokesperson.

Brixton police are pleading with the public to refrain from assaulting people involved in criminal activities in the community.

The spokesperson for the police station Jeanette Backhoff said people should call the police when they catch criminals in the act.

She said, “A suspect was caught by members of the community and badly assaulted. When the police arrived on the scene, the suspect had to been taken to hospital. Members of the community are not assisting in any way if they assault a suspect.”

Backhoff added that there would be consequences for those found to be engaging in such.

“Assault cases will be opened against any community member who assaults a suspect and he or she will be arrested.”

She urged the community to allow the police to do their work by arresting suspects, opening dockets and having those dockets properly investigated by the appointed investigating officer.

The courts will then handle the matter further.
