Police worried about children who wander the streets

BRIXTON – Cases will be opened against parents who leave their children to wander the streets after school.

Police are experiencing a huge problem with primary school children who are being not picked up after school.

The sight of school children walking around the streets of Brixton and the surrounding area with their bags is beginning to worry the police.

Brixton Police Station urges parents and guardians to prioritise the safety of their children by ensuring they are collected from school early so they are not preyed upon by criminals.

Jeanette Backhoff, spokesperson for the police station said, “Children are walking in the streets past five in the afternoon in full uniform with their bookcases but without any supervision. If you ask these children why they are not at home, they will answer by saying that they are still waiting for their transport or their parents to pick them up.”

She added that in addition to these children wandering the streets, they are not able to indicate to the police their exact home addresses or parents’ contact details. This is a very serious problem and parents are warned that cases of negligence will be opened against them if these problem continues to exist or grow.

Backhoff said, “Missing children are reported on a daily basis due to negligence of parents and the caregivers.”

The police are advising schools and parents to take responsibility for the safety of these children.
