Alberts Farm needs you on Spruit Day

Spruit Day is around the corner and the Friends of Alberts Farm is calling on the surrounding communities to jump in and help clean the park.

Member of the Friends of Alberts Farm management committee, Colleen Rood, said there will be a focused clean-up along the Montgomery Spruit. Removing litter is the goal.

“It is particularly bad this year with a lot of illegal dumping from local residents and businesses, and littering by recyclers and other displaced people. People living in the river also contribute [to it],” she said.

“We will also be breaking up the sewerage patch from a leak which occurred a few months ago. This leak has left a hardened layer which needs to be broken up to facilitate natural decomposition.”

If you choose to volunteer, you will be cutting trees overhanging into the river to reduce leaf litter and the spread of seeds of alien plants.

“We want any form of volunteering, from actually being there to clean up to sending a gardener. Or, if that is not possible, to donate money for garden equipment like a spade, fork, pick, chainsaw, wheelbarrow or even wages, up to R100 per person, to employ recyclers or displaced people for the day,” Rood said.

“School learners from local schools near the park are encouraged to participate. They can do community hours for which we will sign or sign up through the Community Hours organisation.”

Residents can come prepared early on 15 September at 9am. The clean-up ends at noon.
