Fairland police warn public of increase in fraud cases

FAIRLAND – Police are hard at work to keep the community safe and as crime free as possible.

An increase in the number of fraud cases is pushing the police to remind the public to be vigilant.

Fairland Police Station has recently experienced an increase in fraud cases being opened at the station.

Police Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Clive de Freitas said, “The Detective Commander, Captain Lekweni is appealing to the community to be more vigilant when buying or selling goods over the internet.”

He also reminds people who buy online to physically inspect goods before paying for them and to ensure that payment is confirmed before handing over goods.

He added, “One must also take note that any agreement entered into, be it written or verbal, is a binding contract which constitutes a civil case and not a criminal case if the agreement is not upheld.”

Apart from the fraud cases the station has been dealing with, they made a couple of crucial arrests in the following crime categories during the month of August (number of arrests):

  • Residential burglary (5)
  • House robbery (4)
  • Assault common (4)
  •  Theft and possession of stolen property (3)
  • Drug related offences (3)
  • Attempted murder (2)
  • Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (2)

Fairland police are also advising community members to be more careful about valuables in vehicles.

This comes after seeing a concerning increase in vehicle related offences such as theft of motor vehicle and out of motor vehicles.

De Freitas advised, “Make sure vehicles are locked by pulling on the handle before walking away from the vehicle and try to not park in isolated areas.”

A Community Policing Forum will be held on 11 September at 6.30pm at the Mosaïek church.

Residents and business owners of the area are encouraged to attend this meeting in order to maximise the safety and security of the neighbourhood.
