Brixton police arrest two after stop and search operation

BRIXTON – According to the police, fighting crime is a collective effort.

A stop and search operation by local authorities’ resulted in suspects being arrested for possession of dangerous weapons.

Brixton police arrested two suspects for possession of dangerous weapons and an unlicensed firearm on 21 August.

The arrests were made at stop and search operation with members of Crime Prevention and Social Crime Prevention.

Spokesperson of the station, Jeanette Backoff said,”Officers noticed two suspicious looking males in a park and they were asked to be searched.

One of the suspects was very nervous and tried to hide something in front of his pants. When searched. they found a long stainless steel knife in his possession.

When searching the second suspect an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was found on him.”

Both suspects were arrested for possession of dangerous weapons and unlicensed firearm and ammunition and will appear in court.

Brixton police are also cautioning business owners to be alert of the increased incidents of business robberies. Backoff said that these suspects can be linked to crimes such as business robberies. She advised the following, “Business owners are warned to be more vigilant, especially small businesses owners that are easy targets.”

Backoff provided the following tips to combat this criminal activity:

  • Verify employment of workers and keep all their personal information on file, such as copies of their ID, drivers licences, contact person and address
  • Make sure that CCTV cameras are in working condition
  • Trade according to trading hours.

She added that fighting crime is a collective effort and the community as a whole is needed to reduce crime.
