Wise words for aspiring nurses at Ann Latsky Nursing College

HURST HILL – Ann Latsky Nursing College hosted a seminar for current and aspiring nurses.

Nurses and aspiring nurses gathered to learn more about their important line of work.

The Ann Latsky Nursing College hosted a seminar on July 4 in the college’s main auditorium.

The keynote speaker was Dr Charlene Downing who spoke widely about what nursing is really about. She indicated that nursing is a passion and not just a career. “Nursing is about experiencing the inner world of a person,” said Downing.

Current and aspiring nurses gather to gain information at the Ann Latsky research seminar.

“We, as nurses and future nurses, need to change the way nursing is defined in South Africa. Change is awkward, but we need to change.”

She explained that there is a shortage of male nurses in South Africa because nursing has been defined as a female line of work. She added that there are insufficient nurses in rural areas.

Downing advised that people shouldn’t take up nursing just because there were no other jobs, but because they have the passion for it.

“When we are nurses, we need to serve our patients, clients and our country in a respectful manner. We need to be present. Both human and technological resources are needed to apply care as a nurse. Lastly, we must always remember to treat our profession with respect and with care.”
