JOBURG – We take a look at important court cases that featured in Joburg this past week.

 

Alleged Metro Cops killer case postponed

The case against the man accused of killing two on-duty Metro police officers was postponed to 18 July at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Albert Pretorius of Paulshof is accused of killing two on-duty Metro police officers, Winnie Mokgolo (35) and Sophie Ngoasheng (45) on Witkoppen Road, Fourways on 29 January. The officers were conducting a roadblock when the accused allegedly ploughed into them driving a Toyota Hilux, killing the two officers and injuring others.

Pretorius has been charged with two counts of culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol. He is currently out on R10 000 bail.

Trespasser sentenced

A 32-year-old man was sentenced to six months imprisonment by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

On 20 November last year, Walter Madona was arrested at a home in Sandton for trespassing. He was found by the caretaker of the house that was in the process of being demolished. It is believed that Madona had intended to steal copper cables from the house. When asked by the caretaker why he was in the yard, he responded by saying he was there to hustle. The police were called and Madona was arrested.

He has been in custody since his arrest. He was convicted and sentenced by Magistrate Renier Boshoff on 14 June.

Sexual assault fine

The Randburg Magistrates’ Court sentenced 31-year-old Brighton Musiso to pay a R2 000 fine or spend 12 months behind bars for sexual assault.

Magistrate Lebogang Leshaba also ordered that Musiso is deported back to his home country as he is in the country illegally. Musiso who, at the time of his arrest was a gardener, was accused of trying to rape his then-employer at her home in Linden.

Musiso lay on top of the complainant, strangled her and tried to take her shorts off.

Possession of stolen property

Peter Matsaung (23) of Alexandra was sentenced to three years imprisonment by Magistrate Renier Boshoff at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Matsaung pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of stolen property after he was found in possession of eight cans of spray paint and plumbing pipes. The property he was found in possession with was stolen during a business break-in in Bramley. He pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property but told the court that he had nothing to do with the business break-in.

Robbers sentenced

The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court sentenced two robbers to 10 years imprisonment.

The two, Calvin Lubisi (31) and Casper Dengo (35) were found guilty for armed robbery with aggravating circumstances. In 2013, the two ambushed a woman when she arrived home. They held her and her husband at gunpoint and later tied them up with shoelaces and put them in one room. They ransacked the house and got away with household items.

The woman’s vehicle was recovered a day after the crime had been committed. The two were arrested a few days later and have been in custody since their arrest in 2013.
