Man nabbed for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition

JOBURG – Police preliminary investigations revealed that the weapon, found in possession of a foreign national, belongs to a security company in Kimberley.

Visible policing proved fruitful when Johannesburg Central police arrested a 31-year-old male for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to the police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, the foreign national was arrested at the corner of Albertina Sisulu and Crown streets on 22 May 2018 at 8pm.

“Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they saw a suspicious-looking white vehicle with three occupants.

They stopped and searched it and that’s when police recovered a firearm with a serial number and live rounds from the driver,” Mbele explained.

He said the suspect failed to produce a firearm licence.

Mbele added that preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm belongs to a security company in Kimberley.

“If the rightful owner failed to report the missing firearm within 24 hours, the owner will be charged according to Section 120 subsection 11 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000,” said the police spokesperson.

Mbele said the investigation is currently underway and the suspect will appear soon at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

“We are appealing to the community to report people who are in possession of unlicensed firearms.

These firearms are used to commit car hi-jackings, business robberies, house robberies and to kill innocent people. Silence is no longer golden,” Mbele concluded.
