Carnation, a Mother’s Day flower

JOBURG – Confused on what flower to give mom today? Get her a Carnation, the flower for Mother's Day.

Did you know that the Carnation is the Mother’s Day flower?

Peabody Patch said Carnations came to represent Mother’s Day since Anna Jarvis, the founder of the day, delivered 500 of them at its first celebration in 1908.

Many religious services later adopted the custom of giving away carnations.

This also started the custom of wearing a carnation on Mother’s Day. Jarvis chose the carnation because it was the favorite flower of her mother.

It is described by Florists’ Transworld Delivery (FTD) as a flower that means fascination, distinction, and love.

One would think this flower’s description are best suited to describe our mothers too because let’s face it, they are fascinating, have an air of distinction about them and give us love that is unconditional.

According to a Christian legend, carnations grew from the Virgin Mary’s tears as she watched Jesus carry the cross.

This is how they became associated with motherly love.

The carnation comes in a variety of colours, pink, white, red, yellow, and scarlet. As FTD explained, each colour of the carnation has a different meaning.

White carnations symbolise purity and luck.
Light red carnations symbolise admiration.
Dark red carnations symbolise love and affection.
Pink carnations symbolise gratitude.
Yellow carnations symbolise disappointment or rejection.
Purple carnations symbolise capriciousness.
