Music collectors gather at Vinyl Sundays

AUCKLAND PARK – Vinyl Sundays hosted dealers who sold a variety of vinyls from around the world.

Vinyl lovers gathered for the annual Vinyl Sundays event, to see what special offers dealers were providing.

The occasion was hosted at the Stanley Beer Yard in Auckland Park, with exciting vouchers and discounts for collectors.

Each dealer offered a discount on all pre-owned vinyls and one lucky person won a voucher to the value of R 1 200 during the Vinyl Sunday lucky number draw. There were over 10 dealers who attended the event on 8 April, selling new and pre-owned vinyls.

Cordell Smith has been attending the event for the last four years.

Black Wax dealers Darren Bell and Greg Waveham sell vinyls during the event.

Recordell dealer, Cordell Smith said he’s been part of the event since it started and has noticed a decline in the attendance of people but the loyalty collectors have remained.

There is a number of factors collectors consider before purchasing a record and these will influence which kind of record they will purchase.

“When people have a particular record, they also tend to want to get an additional one in better condition. Jazz vinyls are rare to find and Vertigo Swirl is also a common favourite because they aren’t easy to find. I find locally SA jazz and rock are popular vinyls to collect for different age groups,” said Smith.

He added that people had a deeper connection to collecting vinyls as opposed to various forms of collecting music.

It’s a feeling of having something which no one has. Collectors had the opportunity in an atmosphere surrounded by music, food, drinks and great company.

Denise Coull said she’s been attending the event for the last three years, in order to find vinyls which aren’t easy to find at an affordable price.

“Today I purchased T-Rex’s Electric Warrior which I initially came for and Eric Clapton and Friends. You cannot replace the feeling of collecting vinyls which are much smoother than CDs,” said Coull.
