Victory Park garden site gets a facelift

The Victory Park refuse site will soon boast upgraded facilities and better efficiency for residents who need to dispose of garden refuse.

Upgrades started last year and are due to be completed by the end of the month, costing the City of Johannesburg about R1,5 million.

The existing guardhouse will soon be demolished and a new one, with two bathrooms and a kitchenette, has already been built. Booms will also be added to control access to the site.

The most striking aspect of the upgrade is most probably the new ramp and storage compartments that are being constructed for better ease of use.

Pikitup’s communications manager, Muzi Mkhwanazi told Northcliff Melville Times that during a roadshow last year, staff had encouraged upgrades at the facility.

“It will be a modern garden site with a focus on recycling. We are trying to encourage people to recycle more because our landfills are filling up,” he said.

The site is one of the busiest in Region B with cooperatives separating the waste and sending it off either for recycling or selling it.

Ward 87 councillor, Bridget Steer said the upgrades would make the entire system more efficient and the refuse would be better contained.

Pikitup’s regional general manager, Rochelle Ludick, said there were currently six sites across the city being upgraded with more sites to be upgraded in the coming financial years.
