AUCKLAND PARK – The University of Johannesburg has been left in shock after one of its students was allegedly killed by a taxi driver.

The University of Johannesburg has been left in shock after one of its students was allegedly killed by a taxi driver.

UJ spokesman Herman Esterhuizen confirmed that Baraka Nafari‚ who is both a PhD student and research assistant within the Department of Economics and Econometrics‚ was knocked down by a vehicle just outside the university’s premises in Auckland Park last Friday morning.

The university said the incident was currently being investigated by the police.

Brixton Police Station spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff confirmed that a case of culpable homicide had been opened.

CCTV footage of the incident has also been handed over to the police for further investigation.

UJ spokesman Herman Esterhuizen cautioned for calm as there had been speculation that the attack was xenophobic.

Esterhuizen said, “It has been a week of loss and of great sorrow, one that has shaken the entire university community.

“The South African Police Service is currently investigating the incident and we are resolutely working closely with the Saps to shed further light on this matter,” Esterhuizen said.
