Police call for background checks for domestic and other workers

JOBURG – The Brixton Police Station has noticed more and more domestic workers are involved in housebreakings and theft and warn residents to do background checks on their home staff.

The Brixton Police Station is calling for homeowners to do thorough background checks on who they employ to work in an around their homes.

Brixton Police Station spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, said the station had noticed a trend regarding housebreakings and theft where domestic workers were often involved.

She said some of these domestic workers passports had expired and they were in the country illegally.

Backhoff issued some tips on how to create a profile for domestic workers as well as people performing other tasks in and around the home such as gardeners and handymen.

What to check when employing someone new in your home:

  • Have a copy of and verify the residential address of the person or one of their family members
  • Make a copy of his or her identity document, passport or other valid forms of identification
  • Make sure the form of identification has not expired
  • Take the person to the nearest police station for police clearance.

“The person that you want to employ can be brought to the station to take fingerprints that will be sent to Pretoria for a proper background check.”
