Join Linden Bowls Club for their open afternoon

LINDEN – The Linden Bowling Club is opening their doors to members of the public for a session on the green with a coach for free.

The Linden Bowling Club is always looking for those interested in the sport to join them on the greens.

The club hosts open afternoons for members of the public keen on taking the sport up from 2pm to 6pm with seasoned coaches Darryl Johnson and Esme Haley to show newbies the ropes or those looking to hone their bowls skills.

Linden Bowling Club’s oldest member, Ken Bavistock (98) watches a game in the rain.

Warren Haley of the bowling club said quite a few members of the public visited the club for the open afternoon as well as many club members.

When the Northcliff Melville Times spoke to Esmé Haley, she said they welcomed anyone who could hold a bowling wood.

She laughed and said other bowling countries all have younger players while South Africa have more mature players. Esmé added that people needed to get out of the mindset that it was a game for the elderly.

“We welcome children from eight to 10 years old all the way through to those who can still hold a bowl in their old age. I mean, our oldest player is 98 years old,” she said excitedly.

For those interested but do not have the necessary equipment, Haley said the club had plenty of bowls available.

She also pointed out that the club had braai facilities as well as a bar and food available upon order.

With regard to their services and facilities, members of the public need not pay unless they join the club.

The club also invites those just keen to watch the sport being played to join them during tournaments as they host many national and international games.
