Northcliff Ridge Ecopark: Providing the best view of the city
NORTHCLIFF – The Northcliff Rotary Club has some exciting plans for Northcliff Ridge Ecopark.
Northcliff Ridge Ecopark is an iconic feature of Johannesburg and attracts visitors from far and wide.
The ridge presents magnificent views of surrounding suburbs, from all directions.
Ian Goldsmith, the public relations officer for Northcliff Rotary Club, said the ridge is one of the oldest settlement areas in the region and traces of human activity have been found here dating back millennia.
“The Northcliff Ridge Eco Project is an initiative [created by] Northcliff Rotary Club in conjunction with the Johannesburg Parks and Recreation Department [which aims] to keep the ridge attractive and inviting to all visitors,” said Goldsmith.
The club welcomes the support of local businesses and residents in maintaining the ridge.
“The aim of the project is to improve accessibility by making it wheelchair friendly and to improve the parking area to create an inviting environment.”
Rotary laid the first wheelchair-friendly pathway on the ridge in 1992. It now requires extensive repair and partial replacement.
“A revamped pathway will be an attractive feature to an already iconic location. We seek your support. The total cost of the project is estimated at R280 000 and involves the repair and replacement of approximately 1 000m² of the pathway, building a viewing platform and clearing and upgrading of the parking area.
“The club has already set aside funds, but it still needs your help to fully fund the project and we invite your sponsorship.”

According to Goldsmith, when 75 per cent of the total estimated cost has been raised, the club will commence with the project. The club is part of the community and it is sensitive to those who value their privacy and do not wish to see additional traffic to the Northcliff Ridge Eco Park.
“Visitors’ safety is always a concern and there are steep cliffs should one move off the pathway. However, we believe the project will enhance visitors’ experiences. Part of the project will be an indemnity notice that all walks and activities are at one’s own risk.”
