Linden police has new social crime prevention member

A policewoman’s dedication to serving her community led her to educate them.

Linden Police Station’s social crime prevention unit communications officer, Constable Takalani Mathumba said she’s been policewomen for nine years and counting.

She recently started her new position in crime prevention on 1 February, which involves educating school children and the community about drug addiction and physical and sexual abuse. Her passion for children is what motivated her to work in this particular field.

“These are the predominant challenges women and children are faced with in particular communities, such as in Windsor East,” she said.

“In many cases, children who are raped don’t tell their parents, however, they might tell someone at school who can then help them. We will be running campaigns targeted at women and children about what to do when they are being abused in terms of domestic violence and rape.”

She added they will also enlist the help of the youth team to assist in talking to young people about drug and alcohol abuse and which areas to target.

Within the campaign, children from different schools will get the opportunity to take a tour around the station and understand the role of police in the community.

Since starting her new position, Mathumba is optimistic about achieving her goals within the planned projects.

“As a police officer, a woman and a mother, I’m planning to reduce the number of cases affecting young people and communities negatively.

“We also welcome volunteers to offer their assistance in our various campaigns and they can contact me directly to find out how they can get involved.”
