Netcare911 sheds light on Westdene shooting

WESTDENE – More clarity on the Banbury Road shooting.

Emergency medical services have shed some light on a shooting incident in Westdene.

The Incident took place on Banbury Road in the evening of 3 December at about 10pm, Netcare911 Media Liaison, Nick Dollman confirmed.

Spokesperson for Sophiatown Police Station, Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, indicated that the driver of a private taxi service and his customer had an argument about the fare, which led to two shots being fired.

De Bruyn indicated that the two had a tussle for the firearm as the driver tried to disarm the disgruntled commuter. While two shots were fired no one sustained gunshot wounds.

Dollman said when Netcare911 arrived on the scene, they found that a man, estimated to be in his 40s, was injured and seemed to have been assaulted with a firearm.

He said the patient was stabilised on the scene and later taken to hospital for further medical treatment.

It is believed from three separate accounts of the incident that the patient was the customer who had allegedly fired the shots during the incident.

While Netcare911 indicates that the man was assaulted with a firearm, an initial report from police indicated that the patient sustained injuries from allegedly falling and hitting his head against the sidewalk. De Bruyn indicated that the driver did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

The commuter was arrested. De Bruyn explained that he will most likely face an attempted murder charge.

At this stage, it is still unclear which private taxi service the victim is from.
