Tennis clinic worthy of teddies

FAIRLAND – Chidren from two to six years old learn tennis in a fun way.

Continuous rain and the delay of teddies did not stop youngsters from learning tennis at the Fairland Tennis Club on 25 November.

The free Teddy Tennis Clinic is designed to encourage learning the sport through fun with teddy bear characters, music, pictures and actions for children aged two to six years old.

While the teddies were late from their picnic, and rain forced the few youngsters who did turn up to move indoors, the handful of children had a blast with ‘head teds’ Philip Lawson and Adam Batten.

‘Head teds’, Philip Lawson and Adam Batten show how they teach youngsters to volley in tennis.

“The children listened very well and learnt volleys and other tennis skills,” said Lawson. “Some were as young as two years old, but they are future tennis stars.”

Jean de Lange, head of the Kinetik Tennis Academy, which has partnered with Teddy Tennis, added, “This kind of fun learning environment encourages the children to learn visually, through sounds and to use their motor skills.”

The pair explained that the programme had been extremely popular with nursery schools before the day, and so another Teddy Tennis Clinic would be held as soon as schools re-open next year.

That event, like this past one, would also be free.
