Speeches were the order of the day when Northcliff Rotary Club hosted the finals of their annual speech competition.
The competition took place recently at De La Salle Holy Cross College. Other primary schools which participated include Bryandale, Bryanston, Blairgowrie, Franklin D Roosevelt, Fairways, Crossroads, Constantia Kloof, Craighall and De La Salle College.
Northcliff Rotary Club president Tommy Stratten said the club has been hosting this event for 36 years, and that it had become a highlight on the primary school calendar over the years. He thanked the hosts and wished all the participants well for upcoming exams.
The winner of the prepared speech category was Ramdin Dino of Fairways Primary School and the runner-up was Megan Hunt from Bryanston Primary School. Mwena Ngandu from Constantia Kloof Primary School was the winner in the impromptu speech category with Ashley Tanton of Blairgowrie Primary School as the runner-up.
The overall winner of the 2017 Speech Competition was Bryanston Primary School while De La Salle Holy Cross College was chosen as the runner-up.
The theme this year for the prepared speech category was ‘It’s the little things that can make a big difference’.
Dean Gounden, Northcliff Rotary Club assistant director of projects, said Bryanston Primary School’s performance stood out and was very strong. The judges unanimously agreed that they [Bryanston] were the undeniable winners and this earned them a R500 voucher from Exclusive Books.
De La Salle Holy Cross as the runner-up won R 350 voucher.
“The aim of the competition is to develop future leaders and also instil in them the Rotary ideals,” said Gounden.
“The standard this year was exceptionally high; most of the participants are attending high school next year and we wish them well in their high school career.”
