Jump in on the Spruit Day excitement at Alberts Farm
ALBERTS FARM – Residents around Alberts Farm and beyond can do their bit to help clean the park on Spruit Day, 16 September.
Spruit Day excitement is building up across Joburg, and this year, Friends of Alberts Farm Conservancy is participating in this celebration.
On Saturday, 16 September, from 9am residents are needed to help clean nearly a kilometre along the Spruit and wetlands in Alberts Farm. From cutting back low-hanging branches over the stream, cutting and clearing alien vegetation and reeds and picking up litter, all the residents’ help is greatly needed.
Julie Gouws, the Conservancy chairperson, said this year, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is assisting with the logistics, and Pikitup will be collecting the rubbish after the event.
“It is a fun way to participate in a good cause, we ask that volunteers please bring rubber gloves, a hat, drinking water and, if possible, wear waterproof shoes such as gum boots.”
Tools like rakes, garden forks and saws are also needed on the day.
Alberts Farm has a unique biodiversity, a fresh water spring, wetlands and rocky ridges.
“The wetlands at Alberts Farm Conservancy boast high levels of biodiversity. A wide array of sedges and grasses to birds of prey, reptiles, yellow mongoose and even the droppings of otters have been found for two years in a row,” she said.
The meeting point is the main car park accessed on the corner of 6th Road West and 8th Street in Greymont.
