Be on the lookout for crime syndicates

BRIXTON– Community members are warned about a group of suspects involved hijackings.

Members of the community are being targeted by a group of people who are involved in housebreaking and house robberies in the Brixton police precinct.

Brixton Police Station spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff said the areas which are mostly targeted are Auckland Park, Brixton, Hursthill and Melville. The times these incidents take place are between 8am and 12pm and late afternoon from 4pm.

Brixton police spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff provides useful tips to avoid being targeted by criminals.

“Members of Brixton Police Station have leads and are following up more information, and arrests will follow soon. All members of the community are urged to stay vigilant and alert at all times,” said Backhoff.

She added that there is also a green Toyota Carolla with three suspects involved in hijackings. The suspects are believed to be armed and target Brixton and Melville residents.

“The same modus operandi is used, where the victim is blocked in their driveway by a green Toyota Corolla and two suspects get out of the car.”

She added that the victim is threatened with a firearm, instructed to lie on the ground before the perpetrators drive off in the car.

Backhoff offered the following tips to avoid hijackings:

  • Be vigilant when you leave or enter your premises
  • Be aware of unknown pedestrians close to your home. Do not turn into your driveway, drive passed and return later
  • Know your neighbours
  • Be aware of vehicles parked close to your address with occupants inside, it might be perpetrators observing the area
  • When returning home after dark, ensure that an outside light is on or have someone meet you at the gate
  • If you have children in the vehicle, take the car key with you when you open the gate.

“If your vehicle is stolen or hijacked, make sure it’s reported to your nearest police station. Please make sure you are able to provide the model, colour, vehicle identification and registration number,” concluded Backhoff.
