Got plastic? Help others

WESTDENE – Kindness Like Confetti urges the community to donate plasic containers to help feed the hungry.

Do you throw your empty margarine containers and plastic cutlery away? What if they could be reused to help feed hungry displaced persons?

Kindness Like Confetti, a Linden-based non-profit organisation that is active in Westdene, Brixton and Westbury, are collecting plastic containers, clean paper plates and plastic cutlery to use when they feed homeless people. The organisation is giving community members an alternative way to donate their plastic while having it used for a good cause.

Alyson Samson, Marisah Watson and Michelle Moodley run a feeding scheme at Eufees Old Age Home in Westdene every Tuesday. Some of the remaining home-cooked food is then given to displaced people in surrounding areas.

“Eufees residents bring their own plastic containers to collect food but the homeless people we’re feeding don’t have containers,” Samson said.

She explained that the organisation is currently running low on containers and is urging members to donate any empty plastic containers.

In one of the areas they feed displaced persons, the trio recently bought clothing for four homeless girls aged two, five, eight and 12 who live on the streets with their father.

“They weren’t even wearing underwear,” an emotional Samson said.

She added that the more they try and make a difference, the more people they find need help, but the organisation can’t continue helping without the means.

While their current focus is on plastic, other donations such as clothes, bedding, food and sanitary pads are all needed. Kindness Like Confetti donation points are in Linden and Sophiatown, and Samson explained that they not only accept donations but take on volunteers as well.
