Giants prove too big for Mustangs

EMMARENTIA – The Mustangs Baseball Club misses out in the field, as the Giants and Imps remain unbeaten this Major League.

The Mustangs Baseball Club gave everything they had to try to withstand the mighty Giants and Imps Baseball Club, but the Major League encounter went against them.

The match at Marks Park Sports Club on 13 August saw the Giants from Edenvale, who are unbeaten in the league, beat the locals 12–8 to be sure of a top place finish in the competition, with one game to go.

Mustangs started the game tied third on the log with the Randburg Mets and Red Socks Baseball Club, and have now dropped to fifth position out of six teams. There is a possibility of moving up if they win the last game and other results are favourable.

But the Mustangs will need to pick themselves up after fielding errors proved costly on a tough day out.

“After seven innings each our batting was equal to theirs but we fumbled too many ground balls in the field,” said Mustangs chairperson, Allen McCabe. He lamented how too many opposition batters made it to first base without a challenge.

“Our preparation for the last match against the Red Socks will include practising ground balls and put outs.”

Giants coach Dean Mckinon agreed that the fielding mistakes by the Mustangs let them down, but the Giants were able to hit more than their opponents, which helped them capitalise on this.

“The key to our success this season has been our hitting and unity in the side,” he said.
