MUST READ: ‘Uber’ driver hijacked, burned with acid

EAST TOWN –A man reported to be an Uber driver was hijacked and burned with acid in East Town this morning (6 August).

A man reported to be an Uber taxi driver was hijacked and burned with acid in East Town during the early morning of 6 August.

The man had picked up his passenger a few minutes earlier from a garage on Gordon Road. The passenger then allegedly threw acid into the drivers face when they reached Milner Avenue, and made off with the vehicle.

Local security company, Suburban Community Policing, found the man screaming on the corner of East Street and Milner Avenue. Clive Maher, from the company, said that he was called out at 2.30am to assist the injured driver.

“He told us that he had picked the passenger up at the garage on Gordon Road, and had acid thrown in his face a few minutes later,” said Maher.

The acid is said to have hit the left side of the man’s face, as well as his neck and hands.

ER24 as well as local police later arrived on the scene. The man was taken to Helen Joseph Hospital.

According to Maher, the vehicle was recovered later the same day, nearby.

Samantha Allenburg, for Uber Communications Africa confirmed that the company was aware of the incident and was still in the process of confirming whether the driver was a registered Uber driver.

Local police were not available for comment at the time of publication.
