Rainbow Line Dancers ready to represent South Africa on the world stage

ROOSEVELT PARK– A group of line dancers look forward to representing South Africa in England.

Rainbow Line Dancers will compete in the World Line Dance Championships in Blackpool in England, which is the most famous venue for dance championships in the world.

In preparation for the competition which runs from 11–13 August, the group of five dancers had their final dress rehearsal this past weekend at the Roosevelt Bowling Club.

Rainbow Line Dancers founder and instructor Leon Nel shows the audience how it’s done.

Leon Nel, the founder and instructor of Rainbow Line Dancers said they are excited to experience Blackpool and they will be delighted if they get a medal. He said this will be the first time that dancers from his club will compete in this particular competition.

Line Dancers rehearse for the Blackpool Championships.

“We are three years old and this is the first time we have the opportunity to compete. The dancers have private lessons three times a week at the studio where we go over the movements. We put in special movements and styling – it’s not only about the actual steps but we also have to put on a performance to show people how much fun it can be,” said Nel.

The most common misconception about line dancing is that it is associated with cowboys. Nel added that they actually do a combination of dances and from time to time they do wear cowboy hats. They use a variety of music for the dances including some Afrikaans and Indian music.

“People don’t realise that it’s open to all kinds of music,” said Nel. This dance enthusiast has been a dancer all his life and was initially a ballroom dancer before he became a line dancer. He encourages anyone who would like to join the club to contact him or visit their website.
