World of Dogs and Cats Pet Expo brings animal lovers together

The much-anticipated World of Dogs and Cats (Wodac) Pet Expo hosted members of the media to a preview of the event at Marks Park on 5 July.

The pet expo, which will be staged at Gallagher Estate from 14 to 16 July, is a three-day experience which caters for all members of the family.

The actual event will be filled with exciting demonstrations by pets belonging to various organisations and owners. People can also look forward to a pet health and wellness area, animal welfare and rescue organisations, a hall of snakes and reptiles, and the main exhibition relating to all things pet related.

Pet owner Ingrid Linnekugel said she has been participating in the expo for many years with her pets. One of her pets is an Irish Wolfhound named Fagan and is the tallest breed in the canine family.

“In spite of these types of breeds’ large stature, it is a very laid back and friendly dog. Originally they were meant for hunting wolves in Ireland, which was a common practice,” said Linnekugel.

During the media preview, organisations had the opportunity talk about their initiatives and the unique traits their pets have. All the demonstrations will be divided into two arenas where breeders, pet experts and the Department of Environmental Affairs will be providing interesting facts and education on animals.

A Jack Russell which was dumped by its owners in Westdene, was recorded on film and took social media by storm. The video was viewed more than 300 000 times and the pet has since been offered over 300 homes. The dog who is yet to be named was also present at the preview and will be handed over to his new owner this week.
