Juma trails full of adventure

EMMARENTIA –The Juma 2017 attracted over 3 000 cyclists competing to win prizes.

The Hollard Jozi Urban Mountain bike Adventure (Juma), attracted thousands of cycling enthusiasts from all over the city. The cold weather did little to damper the spirits of everyone who attended the event on 28 May.

Jerome Charlotteaux and Eugene Beck conquer a steep hill during the Juma.

The Juma had 54km, 22km and the 1km routes through an exciting custom–built obstacle course around the city.

Mark Castel, CEO of Bam, the company that owns Juma, said that every year they focus on improving the event and the riders weren’t disappointed.

“There were less road crossings, more urban sections to explore and a ton of new surprises along the route. The Hollard Juma is tough but the riders are even tougher,” said Castel.

Malusi Buthelezi finishes the Juma.

A father and son duo, Jeffrey and Daniel Johns, participated in the 22km ride and had a great time. Jeffrey said the race went well in spite of the bottlenecks and the rough grass trails. This race is the second year he’s participated in the Juma.

Santi Burger and Karen Harmse happy to complete the race.

“Last year I rode in a different distance but it’s always special when I ride with my son,” said Jeffrey. Daniel said that the most challenging part of the ride were the hills. He described them as being very steep and rocky.

“I prepared for the race really hard whenever I had the time to and hope to participate again next year,” said Daniel.

The Juma had fun activities for spectators.
