Anti–bullying campaign at Auckland Park-based school makes a difference

AUCKLAND PARK – Anti–bullying campaign educates schoolchildren about the implications of bullying and how to curb it.

Auckland Park Academy of Exellence (Apax) hosted an Anti–Bullying Campaign on 18 May which focused on various forms of bullying.

‘It’s not big to make others feel small’ was the theme for this year’s campaign.

Apax head of the Islamic department, Akhtar Ali said this is not the school’s first anti–bullying campaign as the school has focused on various forms of bullying in the past.

“All our learners from Grade 1 to Grade 12 participated in the campaign. The teachers played a very important role by focusing on various themes which were incorporated within our daily lessons.

“For example step up – don’t not be a bystander, don’t blurt what might hurt, finding the hero in me and don’t support it – record it – report it. We believe it’s important to raise awareness about bullying because many times the impact of bullying is not just merely detrimental to the individual but also to the broader community,” said Ali.

According to Ali, bullying also impedes and limits the schoolchildren’s potential.

“There’s been limited cases of bullying at our school but I believe the only way to address it is by educating learners, parents and teachers.”

A legal specialist, who deals with implications of the misuse of social media, addressed educators and schoolchildren during an assembly, which also set out to teach the school complement about bulling.

Naafia Amod in Grade 11 said she has always known that bullying is an epidemic that needs to be stopped. This year’s campaign helped her realise the social, emotional, physical and legal consequences of bullying through cyberbullying.

“The campaign reminded me to be more mindful, tolerant and kind. It has also given me the hope that schools and learners who work together have the power to end bullying around the world,” concluded Amod.
