SOPHIATOWN – Sophiatown Police Station appeals to residents to be vigilant when it comes to their home safety.

Sophiatown Police Station has appealed to the public to be more vigilant when at home.

Spokesperson for the station, Warrant officer TJ de Bruyn said,

“There has been several housebreakings reported within our jurisdiction lately and because of this, we want to give safety tips concerning the public’s safety at home.”

  • Know all your emergency numbers.
  • Keep your cellphone in the bedroom.
  • Never leave keys in a gate or lock.
  • Get a friend or neighbour to keep a regular eye on your property and to remove mail and newspapers. Mail left in the gate is also a sign that nobody is home.
  • Make provision for good outside lighting and use lighting to your advantage. Lights that are on the inside while it is dark outside put you at a disadvantage.

Lights that are on the outside when it is dark inside allows you to observe what is going on without being seen.

  • Never leave workers or contractors unattended in your home.
  • Do not leave ladders standing around.
  • Outside door locks should be changed when you move into a new home or after keys have been lost or stolen.
  • Conduct thorough background checks before employing anyone. Request their identity document and make a copy for safe keeping. Check their references and do security clearances at the police station.
  • Be careful what is discussed in front of staff.
  • Keep trees and plants trimmed to eliminate hiding places.
  • Don’t leave your garage, front or back door open.
  • Inform the police of any suspicious characters who you consider to pose a threat.
