Brixton’s movie night

BRIXTON – Residents of Brixton gather to share a night of laughter together as they watched a local movie.

Residents enjoyed the first of many movie nights that are to be held in Kingston Frost Park.

Community members were treated to a night of laughs and community unity as they watched the screening of a local movie, Material at the newly cleared out clubhouse.

Monique Whitaker, a member of the Brixton Community forum and one of the organisers of the movie night, said they plan to host these movie nights every second Saturday of the month after the park day.

“These sorts of nights had happened before in the community, back in the 60s and 70s,” she explained.

She added that through such initiatives they want to get a more active community which will help people to get to know each other better.

All of this would then form part of what would make Brixton an even stronger community and a great place to live in.

On the night, residents were asked to bring a picnic basket though they received free popcorn. Lemonade was also on sale to help with fundraising for the community.

Whitaker shared that though they had intended to have the movie night outside, they opted to have it in the clubhouse due to the wet weather on the evening.

“Our hopes moving forward, are to have many more events at the clubhouse.”

She said the turnout for the movie night was great as they used social media platforms and posters around the neighbourhood to let people know about it.

When asked how it came about that the first movie to be screened was Material, Whitaker said they want to screen many local movies and it was also great that it was filmed in the neighbouring community, Fordsburg.

“We also contacted the director of the film and [he was] happy to have us screen it.”

Whitaker concluded with hopes that such initiatives would bring the community together, making it less vulnerable to crime.
