Through a collaborative effort, Parktown Boys’ High School’s aquatic/water polo committee and Mad Swimmers raised R9 240 for Guild Cottage, an organisation that provides remedial programmes to sexually abused children.
As the committee has always supported worthy causes, previously supporting organisations such as Pink Drive, CHOC and the Sunflower Fund, they found it easy to carry on the tradition.
Mad Swimmers, a charity organisation involved in daring swimming challenges, and the committee raised funds by hosting a co-ed swimming gala, with about nine schools from around the country participating.
To take part in the gala, each school paid a R500 fee and Tracey Fin, one of the people who helped organise the event, said such events seemed to bring awareness to the swimmers.
“It encourages a system of giving back to the community,” said Fin.
Executive director of Guild Cottage, Nomvula Vilakazi, said the organisation was really grateful for the money they received through the efforts of the school and Mad Swimmers.
“The money will help [us] look after the children and will be put to good use.”
