A group of 13 students was held up at gunpoint on 8 March inside the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Auckland Park campus.
The two suspects fled the scene with the students’ iPads and laptops.
No students were harmed during the robbery. One of the suspects was shot during a shootout with officers of a private security company on the campus. After the incident, the university released a statement stating that the safety of the students was their first priority.
Northcliff Melville Times asked other students what their thoughts were on the robbery.
UJ student Traumain Stols, who lives in Eldorado Park, said these kind of incidents were not a major concern to him.
“I’m from a neighbourhood where these sort of incidents happen often. I believe you can get robbed anywhere,” said Stols.
Fellow student Sinethemba Mnguni said she did not feel safe after hearing about the incident. She too attends night classes, like the students who were robbed.
Some students were unaware of the event, whereas others heard about the robbery from different sources such as social media or from other students.
Lincoln Mashitisho said he was unaware of the incident until he heard about it from another student and said the university was not to blame.
Palesa Motseko said she was concerned about how the robbers gained access onto the campus.
UJ’s senior manager of strategic communications, Kaamini Reddy said they were confident that the suspects would be apprehended and that they planned to increase security on campus.
