13 UJ students robbed at gunpoint on campus
AUCKLAND PARK – A group of students were held at gunpoint on campus, at the University of Johannesburg.
AUCKLAND PARK – A robbery took place at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on 8 March, where students were held up at gunpoint and robbed of their valuables. The incident involving two robbers, took place in a laboratory on campus.
SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said that the students were robbed of their laptops and iPads. He added a shootout between a security company and the suspects took place, resulting in one of the suspects being wounded.
“No suspects have been arrested and there is currently a man hunt on for the two suspects. A case of attempted murder and robbery has been opened and we encourage members of the public to contact crime stop with any leads regarding the case,”said Dlamini.
Meanwhile UJ’s senior manager of strategic communications Kaamini Reddy said that the university has tightened access control measures, with the safety and security of all its stakeholders in mind. It is reported that two armed men held up 13 students who were studying in the laboratory, at 10.30pm. The suspects fled on foot but fortunately there was no injury to any of the students involved.
She add that the students are being provided with the required counselling and support. The University management is confident with the information they have about the incident, the investigation done by the SAPS and are certain it will result in the suspects being arrested.
In addition Reddy said that UJ takes incidents that compromise a safe learning environment seriously and will not hesitate to apply its own disciplinary codes in the event that perpetrators are members of the university.
“Initiatives to significantly elevate security measures are being revised on the campus and at student residents to ensure the safety and security of our students at all times. UJ is actively engaging with the SAPS, emergency services, local ward councellors and the City of Johannesburg to protect students on campus and in the vicinity of its campuses,” concluded Reddy.
