Councillor’s Corner: Disruptive trees

JOBURG – Read this week's question in Councillor's Corner.

Do you have a question for a ward councillor?

As a local newspaper, the Randburg Sun provides a platform for residents to learn about, understand and follow local government. As an extension of that, there is a weekly column called Councillor’s Corner which is a platform for you, our readers, to voice your concerns or questions for ward councillors to respond to.

Resident Gaahele Mokgoro got his opportunity to pose a question:

What are the bylaws concerning trees on pavements that obscure the road causing a safety hazard for motorists?

Ward 85 councillor, Carl Mann, answered:

There are no bylaws with regards to trees, but if you believe a tree is obscuring traffic, you can let City Parks’ Street Trees Department know. The department will come out and see if the trees are indeed obscuring traffic and they will obtain a way leave application form from the Johannesburg Roads Agency to either cut down the tree or trim it, depending on the hazard.

After you have lodged a complaint and received a reference number with City Parks, wait about 24 hours. If they do not come back to you, send your ward councillor an email with the reference number. Go to www.lookandlog.co.za for more information on waiting times and contact details.

Different, willing, ward councillors will respond to a question each week.

Email your burning questions to aimeed@caxton.co.za and let’s get the ball rolling.
