Accessing Joburg’s free wi-fi

JOBURG – The City has introduced 1 000 free Wi-Fi spots all over Johannesburg.

Recently, 1 000 Wi-Fi hotspots were rolled out across public areas in the City of Johannesburg.

The municipality announced that the Jozi Free Wi-Fi App could be downloaded through the iPhone App Store and Android’s Google Play.

According to Jozi Digital Ambassadors, a contracted organisation which helps residents connect to the free Wi-Fi, residents can find a free Wi-Fi hotspot at more than 80 libraries, 30 clinics, swimming pools, Rea Vaya bus stations and more.

The organisation, found at www.digitalambassadors.org.za, explains that residents can connect to this free data via CoJsmartwifi and Joburg_FreeWiFi.

How does one connect?

• Tap Settings and then Wi-Fi, and make sure Wi-Fi is turned on

• Your device will search for all the available Wi-Fi networks. Be sure to choose an open Wi-Fi. If the network is not open there will be a lock icon next to the network’s name which will require a password

• Tap the name of the Wi-Fi network you’d like to join, either CoJsmartwifi or Joburg_FreeWiFi.

Jozi Digital Ambassadors said the City’s network will provide residents with 300Mb of data per day, equivalent to 9Gb per month for general usage. However, if residents access services through the Maru A Jozi digital platform portal at www.maruajozi.joburg, uncapped internet usage will be available.
