Millions lost in FNB deposit box heist

RANDBURG - FNB Randburg urges residents who have a safety deposit box to report their loss to the police.

A Bordeaux resident has estimated that has she lost millions of rands after several safety deposit boxes were stolen during a heist at the First National Bank (FNB) branch in Randburg on 17 December.
Natalie Brunsdon whose mother suffered the loss said that the bank only alerted them of the robbery on 22 December. “My mother kept family heirlooms, jewellery and Kruger Rands in her safety deposit box and the value everything is over millions of Rands,” she said.
She added that she did not think that the bank would compensate them as they did not know what they had kept in their respective boxes.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said that once the robbers had gained access to the bank’ s safety deposit box vault they stayed in there for several hours and made off with several boxes containing valuables.
“We are currently investigating a case of business robbery and if anyone has any information regarding the robbery must immediately call the police,” he said. He explained that the suspects made their getaway in a quantum taxi and that police were still investigating the case.
