9 injured in overturned taxi

MELVILLE - Paramedics and emergency services attended to the nine injured and rescued the driver from the taxi wreckage.

Nine people were injured when a taxi overturned on Beyers Naudé Drive near 4th Avenue this morning.

Chris Botha, media liaison officer for Netcare 911, said paramedics and the fire department arrived at the scene and found the roadway littered with accident debris. The driver was found still trapped in the twisted metal with serious injuries.

The Netcare 911 rescue officer and firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the driver while medics worked hand in hand to stabilise the injured.

“Nine people from the vehicle were found to have sustained injuries ranging from serious to moderate. The injured were treated at the scene before medics transported them to various hospitals for further care,” said Botha.

Reports from the scene indicate that the taxi collided with a car before it overturned, coming to rest on its roof across the roadway around 6am on 9 December.
